Why this adapter

With a cable there is nothing to pair and no signal dropouts: it is the most stable way to use an ELM327 with a Windows laptop. The CD has the drivers and a diagnostic program; other Windows programs work too.

The drivers and program on the CD are for Windows only; there is no official Mac support, although some third-party programs may work. It is no use with a phone: for iPhone or Android see the Wi-Fi or Bluetooth models.

PIC18F25K80 chip

Inside there is a PIC18F25K80 microcontroller, the same one in every unbranded ELM327 Satkit sells. It is the chip found in the clones that diagnostic forums rate best: a programmable microcontroller from the same family (PIC18) as the original ELM327, usually running firmware based on the original 1.4.

FORScan on a Ford?

This cable only reaches the HS-CAN network. To get into every module on a Ford or Mazda you need MS-CAN access, like the ELS27, which switches network by itself.
