Why this adapter

The most basic ELM327: it reads generic and manufacturer fault codes, clears them and shows live data such as RPM, temperature, speed or throttle position. On Android, the most used app is Torque.

Before you buy

It fails with quite a few cars that use the older ISO 9141 or KWP2000 protocols, among others the Citroën C3 2004, Peugeot 206 2001, Renault Mégane II 2005, Fiat Tipo 2002 and several Toyota, Kia, Hyundai, Nissan and Mitsubishi models from those years. If your car is from that era, get the ELM327 Bluetooth v1.5 or the Konnwei KW903 instead.

It does not work with an iPhone (it is classic Bluetooth): for iPhone, get a Wi-Fi adapter.

v2.1 with a PIC18F25K80 chip?

This adapter uses the same PIC18F25K80 microcontroller as Satkit's ELM327 v1.5 adapters. "v2.1" is just the number the firmware reports when an app asks for it (the ATI command), not the chip: a clone can report any version it likes. Inside, it is the same chip as the v1.5. To see which commands it really answers, test it with an app such as ELM327 Identifier (Android).
