The YB12AL-A2 column gives the specifications from Yuasa, the brand whose name is associated with the battery code; the other column gives the specifications of the battery sold by Satkit. Capacity is always compared at the same hourly rate, and starting current using the same standard.
What does YB12AL-A2 mean?
- YB: Yuasa’s YuMicron series of high-performance conventional flooded batteries.
- 12: in this case, it is close to the capacity: the YB12AL-A2 has a capacity of 12 Ah at the 10-hour rate.
- L: the polarity is reversed, with the positive terminal on the right when the label is facing you.
- -A2: the terminal arrangement, vent outlet and case shape. There is no general rule: check the drawing for each battery code.
Battery codes that are easy to mix up with the YB12AL-A2
| Battery part number | Dimensions | Polarity | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| 12N12A-4A-1 | 134 × 80 × 160 mm | Positive terminal on the left | Same case, opposite polarity: it will not fit electrically, even if it fits in the space. |
| YB12A-A | 134 × 80 × 160 mm | Positive terminal on the left | Same case, opposite polarity: it will not fit electrically, even if it fits in the space. |
| YB12AL-A | 136 × 82 × 162 mm | Positive terminal on the right | Same polarity and a similar case, but 2 mm longer, 2 mm wider and 2 mm taller: only suitable if your battery compartment has that extra room. |
Satkit battery for the YB12AL-A2
OUTDO YB12AL-BS: 12 V and 12 Ah, 165 A starting current, sealed AGM, factory-activated and factory-charged.
Before switching to a sealed battery
The original battery is conventional. An AGM or gel battery can replace it as a maintenance-free option if the motorcycle’s voltage regulator/rectifier charges between 14.0 and 14.8 V with the engine running at 3000–4000 rpm. If it charges at a lower voltage, stick with a conventional flooded battery. A sealed battery does not have a vent tube, so leave the motorcycle’s vent tube disconnected.
